Under terms of a $1.3 billion settlement, AstraZeneca will pay $1.3 billion to resolve claims that the company failed to adequately warn patients about the risk of bipolar disorder, a rare but serious mental illness.
The settlement includes $100 million of the $1.3 billion in damages, including $5 million in punitive damages.

AstraZeneca is also facing a number of additional charges related to the Seroquel settlement and its marketing, including criminal and civil charges.
In August 2011, AstraZeneca agreed to pay $3.5 million in compensatory damages and $2.4 million in punitive damages against Seroquel for alleged breach of express and implied warranties.
The settlement will be $500,000 for the first time. The company will pay $1.3 billion to resolve cases brought by plaintiffs who say that they have suffered injuries linked to the company's conduct and that the company failed to provide adequate warnings to physicians.
The company has been named in several lawsuits brought against AstraZeneca since 2008.
